Comments: 'It's Never Enough for This School District'

Locals largely show disdain as the Smithtown School District adopts a $224 million budget.

If Smithtown School Districts were looking for applause after adopting a $224 million 2013-2014 school budget, they definitely didn't get it considering the host of comments we saw on Smithtown Patch or our Facebook page. That's not to say there weren't a few supporters.

Scroll down for a rundown of some of the points made by our readers. And be sure to share yours below.

- It's never enough for this school district. Taxes are already out of control. Make the cuts and run the school with the same budget...I know it will be devastating if they don't get more money...I'll bet we will all be ok and our children will still get an excellent education if they are not able to raise taxes.

- We are looking to move to an area where the quality and pace of life is more sane and the taxes are far less. There are places with these features that do exist. In the not too distant future, the only people left living on Long Island will be the very wealthy who can afford the high cost of living and the very poor who will not be able to afford to leave. The middle class will be extinct.

On Teacher Raises:

- If you look at their overall compensation, which includes Salary, health benefits, pension packages, etc. it is far above the norm of the private sector worker. Why do you think they deserve automatic raises every year? Don't you realize when an economy is poor and everyone elses incomes are DOWN, there should be no raises?

- My question is this, when are they going to stop giving automatic raises? What kind of nonsense is that in the state of this economy? When are they going to realize, the costs are not in what we're spending on student programs; it's in automatic raises, bloated benefits packages and health care.

On Other Cuts:

- Why do we need so many AIDES and ASSISTANTS??? The teachers do not need aides. And the late buses - easy solution. Have a few buses that will take the kids home.

- I'm voting it down. Enough. Cut Middle school sports, 5th grade band, late buses and freeze salaries, contribute more to health care (like the rest of us). We need a 20 percent school tax cut.

- I would rather see language cut. Music is actually useful and can be used throughout their entire lives. I don't recall people getting together in their garage to speak Italian.

The Supporters:

- I don't have any kids, yet I realize he important it is for me to support the town that supported me (school taxes). Our teachers deserve their salaries, and I have no problem paying them a salary which allows them to live comfortably in our town. Yes there is room for improvement, but we should support our teachers and force the state to better support our schools.

- Programs should NOT be cut, children need a comprehensive education if they are going to have any chance of succeeding in the future
