East Arts Students Design T-Shirts to Support Programs, Japan

Designs features works created by the high school's 2012 Arts Honor Society.

Smithtown East's 2012 Arts Honor Society is selling a t-shirt it designed to raise money for arts programs as well as relief efforts for the Japanese population devastated by last year's earthquake and tsunami.

According to Timothy Needles, an art and media teacher who mentors the honor society, the shirt design incorporates a patchwork art by himself and 15 students.

"We had recently learned about how to create t-shirts in my computer art and design class so we used the new digital method to create the shirt in full color using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator," Needles said in an email.

The shirts cost $19.50 a piece and are up for sale at MySoti, a website that allows designers to create their own t-shirts and sell them online.

Needles said the class chose Japan relief as a charity because they had been working with Japanese students a lot during the school year.

The following students contributed to the design: Jessica Vestuto, Jeri-Anne Vestuto, Taylor Dowling, Melissa Shaw, Rick Savino, Dylan Ahern, Samantha Intardonato, Kyle Stroveglia, Clayton Sontag, Sabrina Shankar, Christine Murphy, Alejandro Carazo, Gabrielle Lynn, Jennifer DeRosa and Jess Mannino.

"Why are Smithtown teachers continuing to pay for school supplies out of their ownRead More pocket?" Since when? Ever see the big list of supplies kids get in their folders at the end of the year for them to bring in next year? I think you're talking about the wrong school district.
