A Smithtown High School East student was named a semifinalist in the 2012 Intel Science Talent Search, one of 300 high school seniors throughout the country.
Rachel Michelle Davis, 17, of St. James, is one of the 300 students chosen of the 1,839 talent search competitors – the most participants the contest has seen in more than a decade. Davis was chosen for her project, "Engineering Biodegradable Flame Retardant Polymer."
As a semifinalist, Davis took home $1,000 and another $1,000 was earned for Smithtown High School East.
Of the semifinalists, 40 will be named as finalists on Jan. 25, and will head to Washington, D.C. from March 8-13 to compete for more than $630,000 in awards provided by the Intel Foundation.
