Photo of the Day: West's Safe Driving Message on the Underpass

Illustrations on the West Main Street underpass denounce driving hazards and promote responsible driving.

One of Smithtown’s artistic gems relays a message to drive safely, encouraging drivers to avoid getting behind the wheel of a car with impaired judgment or distractions from using cell phones, drugs or alcohol.

The wall of the West Main Street underpass just beyond the bull is adorned with a painting that promotes the messages “Stay Alive Just Drive,” “Drive Well Ditch The Cell,” and "Beware and Be Aware.” Along with the text, the wall features illustrations of potential distractions, from an iPod to alcohol, pills and a cell phone.

Contributors to the wall include S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions) and West’s Leadership class.

For those who only catch glimpses of the wall driving because you obey the rules of the road like the message promotes, Patch cameras snapped a few shots of the underpass.
