Seniors in Rocky Point High School’s cosmetology program opened their salon doors and welcomed their first customers of the season this October.
Now in its eighth year at the high school, the cosmetology program continues to be a class favorite among students and runs for three periods during the school day.
As part of the program, the students learn the proper techniques for a wide range of salon services, including how to do different types of haircuts, perms, facials and hair coloring. After practicing many of these techniques on mannequin heads, the students are ready to service actual clients at the high school’s salon.
Students that complete the two-year program are able to take the New York State Board of Cosmetology written and practical exams in order to receive their license to practice cosmetology in public.
On the first day of the salon this year the students tended to 13 clients, some
of whom have been visiting the salon since their first year. The cosmetologists-
in-training gave color applications, perms and haircuts. They also performed facials and manicures.
The cosmetology students also sold and affixed pink hair extensions to their clients in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The salon is open between 11:15 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Those interested in visitng should call 631-744-1600 ext. 6369.
