Smithtown Elementary Student Takes Home First Prize in Essay Contest

Aspiring writer Megan O'Haire won the contest with her essay based on the topic, "I Feel Creative When..."

Smithtown Elementary student Megan O’Haire took first prize in the intermediate grades category of the Long Island Presidents’ Council of  New York State United Teachers essay contest.

O’Haire’s prize-winning essay earned her $500. The essay topic was, “I Feel Creative When...” The young writer wrote in her essay that school is not only a place to learn, but also a place to be your best and be creative.

The contest was open to kindergarten through high school seniors from school districts throughout Long Island. This year’s contest resulted in 12 finalists from the thousands of essays submitted. As part of the contest, the finalists were asked to submit a recording of the essay, and the final selections were made based on content, clarity, sincerity, and spoken delivery.

O’Haire’s recorded essay is now being aired on 11 radio stations and will be on air until the end of September.
