Girls Basketball: East splits, West drops two

Smithtown East beat Centereach, 44-35, on Thursday, to improve to 3-4 in League III. Shannon O’Connor and Nicole Shevlin each scored 14 points to lead East to the win. East lost to second-place Riverhead, 54-29, on Tuesday. O’Connor paced the Bulls with 12 points. Fran Busa added six.

West fell to Copiague on Thursday, 51-25. Leading scorers were Katherine Delanty and Savannah Miller with seven points each. West (1-6) fell to Centereach, 45-33, on Tuesday. West led by two points entering the fourth quarter, but was outscored 21-7. Melissa Meyers led West with 12 points. Kirsten Viscount and Miller each added 10 points.

Girls Bowling: Smithtown run comes to an end

Smithtown had won five of its last six matches before running into the top two teams in League I. The Bulls lost to first-place East Islip, the best team in Suffolk, on Tuesday, 37-3, then dropped a 35-5 match to second-place Islip on Thursday.

Victoria Bontempo was the high scorer in both matches, posting a 602 series and 237 high game on Tuesday, with a 548/236 on Thursday. Crystal Johnson rolled a 560/215 on Thursday, while Laura Molloy had a 578/210. Bontempo has one of the top 15 averages in the county at 190.41. She also has the seventh-highest series score (707) and high game (268) in Suffolk.

Girls Winter Track: East, West shine at Mitchell meet

The East and West girls’ winter track teams had several top-10 performances at the Art Mitchell Memorial Meet Saturday at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood.

West’s Alyssa Knott won the open 3,000 meters in 11:01.7, while East’s Stephanie Defazio placed 15th in 12:07.15. East’s Kelsey Amarosa took fourth in the open 1,000 meters in 3:09.9 and placed 14th in the open 300 in 46.58 seconds.

East’s Michelle Conrad finished sixth in the open triple jump with a leap of 32- feet, 3 ½ inches, and placed sixth in the open 600 meters in 1:50.17. East’s Sarah Kappelmier placed 20th in the open 55-meter hurdles in 10.86 seconds. She also finished the 55-meter dash in 8.77 and the open 300 in 48.48.

Top performances were also posted in the freshman and sophomore events, led by East’s Tristan Bevans, who won the sophomore long jump at 16-0.5, and placed seventh in the 300 meters in 46.93 seconds. East’s Melissa Knapp was third in the sophomore 1,500-meter racewalk in 8:10.42, followed by Danielle Reffsin of West, who was eighth in 8:54.16. Nicole Marshall of East placed sixth in the sophomore 600 in 1:52.49.

In the freshman events, West’s Dora Penavic was second in the 300 in 46.75 seconds and sixth in the triple jump at 28-11.5. West’s Aliya Lewis was fifth in the 300 in 48.44. East’s Christy Baars finished fourth in the 1,500 in 5:27.15.

Freshman 1,500: Samantha Manalastas, West, 5:32.77.

Freshman 55 meters: Jessica Ryan, West, 8.66; Foubister, 9.31.

Sophomore 55: Caitlyn Mensch, East, 8.58.

Sophomore 300: Mensch, 50.63.
