Smithtown School Notebook: 3 Meetings, Conferences This Week

Check out the news and notes surrounding the Smithtown Central School District for the week.

Meetings and Conferences

The Smithtown Central School District has a busy schedule ahead of them, with three meetings and parent-teacher conferences rounding out the week.

First, a regular Board of Education meeting is set for Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Joseph Barton Building on New York Avenue. The full agenda can be viewed here

There is also a community budget information meeting set for Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Joseph Barton Building, which is the same date for a Business Affairs work session.

The final meeting for the week is the Facilities Committee meeting. The committee will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Joseph Barton Building.

To wrap up the week, a half-day is set for elementary schools on Friday due to parent-teacher conferences.

News and Notes

News breaking of a shook things up in the district, with concerns coming from parents and extra safety precautions taken by the district to keep kids safe.

Superintentendent Edward Ehmann and West Principal John Coady held a press conference Friday following dismissal at the Joseph Barton Building giving an update on the situation and discussed the school's "lockdown" protocol that was employed.

Ehmann reported Friday afternoon that of an enrollment of roughly 1,700 kids. 

The superintendent also stated the district will continue a modified version of the "lockdown," where backpacks will continue to be searched and kids will be funneled through select exits and entrances until there is confidence that the situation has been diffused.

In elementary school news, with themes from school events including the Teddy Bear Clinic, Fairy Tale Ball, Heritage Day and more.

 senior Matt Morganelli had a recently as he not only beat his personal best and school best throw distance once, but he did it twice – a throw of 51-feet 6-inches at the Long Island Elite Championships at St. Anthony’s High School, and later a throw of 52-feet 8-inches at the New York State High School Indoor Track & Field Championships at Cornell University.
