Sports Notebook: West, East Boys Soccer Have Winning Week

East and West varsity action for the week of Sept. 19-25.

FOOTBALL

Newfield 49, East 7—Newfield improved to 3-0 in Division II while East fell to 0-3 Saturday. Mike Buono scored East’s lone touchdown in the fourth quarter, a 7-yard run.

Deer Park 14, West 9—Deer Park’s goal-line stand and forced fumble clinched victory and spoiled West’s homecoming Saturday. James Pannell scored a touchdown on an 8-yard run in the third quarter to cut the deficit to five. Dylan Rieckehoff had a 32-yard field goal for West (0-3).

BOYS SOCCER

West 3, Newfield 1—Edward Viscount scored twice and Mike Bennett scored the go-ahead goal to lead West on Saturday. West is 2-0 in League III, 3-1 overall.

East 2, Centereach 1—Jim Ten Brink and Nick Zanfardino scored for East in its win Saturday. East is in first place in League III at 3-0, 5-2 overall. Billy Arteca made seven saves in goal.

East 1, East Islip 0—Ryan Burton’s second-half goal was all East needed Thursday. Bill Arteca earned his second shutout.

East 3, Riverhead 2—Nick Zanfardino scored twice Monday, including the game-winner in overtime. Jim Ten Brink also scored for East.

GIRLS SOCCER

West 2, Hills East 0—Nicolette Scrozzo scored twice Friday and Courtney Duhning made five saves for the shutout to lead West (4-1-1).

West 4, East 0—Olivia Wellenger, Lorena Almanzar, Kayla Dantona and Gabby Scirica scored for West in its win Wednesday. Haley Cascone earned the shutout.

West 6, Newfield 0—Gabby Scirica had the hat trick Monday. Kayla Dantona, Kim Spibiarich and Emily Hein also scored.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

East 3, Newfield 1—East improved to 5-0 Friday and is in first place in League III, Trish Baxley led the way with 23 kills.

East Islip 3, West 0—West fell to 2-4 overall Friday and is 2-2 in conference play.

West 3, Hills East 1—West won the last two games Tuesday, getting 16 kills from Shelby Tietjen. Sharon Bossert had 18 assists.

East 3, Whitman 0 (Tuesday)

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Bay Shore 3, West 1—West fell to 0-2 Thursday.

Bay Shore 3, East 1—East (2-1) suffered its first loss Monday to unbeaten Bay Shore.

BOYS GOLF

East 9, Huntington 0—East improved to 3-1 with Thursday’s win. Gibert Chang and Josh Leddy each shot a 36.

West 6, Hills West 2—West improved to 2-2 Wednesday. Tom Whelan led West with a 40.

Commack 6, West 3 (Tuesday)

East 9, Hills East 0—Jesse Kovacs (36), Josh Leddy (37) and Gilbert Chang (37) were low for East.

BOYS X-COUNTRY

Rob Calamia won the 5K Varsity A race in 17:11 to lead Smithtown to a second-place finish at the Suffolk Coaches Invitational Saturday.  

FIELD HOCKEY

Whitman 1, West 0—Samantha Steinberg made 10 saves for West (1-2, 1-3) in a losing effort Saturday.

Centereach 3, West 0 (Tuesday)

They are indoors and at the age where driving may not be an option. And the facility faces Route 25A. A main corridor that has been used as a main road for over 50 years. A road that has gas stations,bars, hospitals, nursing homes, retail stores and high schools presently on it. Why not an assisted living.

We have an assisted living center right next to our neighborhood. For the most part it is quiet,Read More there is not a lot more traffic, it even looks nice. I will take it over another strip mall, supermarket, bar any day . Like the previous poster wrote, it serves our community.
