UPDATE: Biggio Falls Short Votes for Baseball Hall of Fame, Again

Update: Smithtown native Craig Biggio fell short of the 75 percent of votes necessary to be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame when results were announced Wednesday afternoon, according to Sporting News. 

Biggio received 74.8 percent of votes, falling less than 1 percent short of being inducted with the 2014 class. 

Those who made the cut: former Atlanta Braves pitchers Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine, and former Chicago White Sox slugger Frank Thomas.

A Smithtown native could be among those voted into the 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame class on Wednesday afternoon. 

Craig Biggio, a professional baseball player who has collected 3,000 hits and took the Houston Astros to the postseason six times over a 20-year career, was the leading vote-getter on a ballot of 37 candidates in 2013. Despite coming up short in 2013, Biggio has a second chance this year with the voting results expected to be announced at 2 p.m. Wednesday. 

Biggio played baseball for Kings Park High School, where the second baseman's presence is still felt, Kings Park Athletic Director Dan Butler told The Houston Chronicle. 

The Kingsmen varsity baseball team plays on Craig Biggio field and his football jersey's still on display, as Biggio won a county-wide award for best football player in 1983. 

Students pass by it every day. 
"They still know who he is. All of the kids who are here weren’t alive when he graduated high school, but they’ve been able to follow his career. I think it really is a source of pride for the whole community," Butler told The Houston Chronicle.
