The St. James based Strong Island Derby Revolution Roller Derby Team won their recent season home opener bout against the visiting Massachusetts Worchester Warriors by 94-88.
The bout was sold out as over 800 fans packed the Sports Arena in St. James. The team says they are getting tremendous community support and that tickets sold out a week in advance and they had to turn people away.
There are currently about 40 members on the team and they say Roller Derby is becoming very popular on Long Island and world-wide.
"I was very excited to do an all female sport … this was a real sport that was designed for women and proved how tough and enduring they could be," said Smithtown resident and Villa Napoli owner Mary Imossi, a.k.a. "Cookie Momster."
"Playing Roller Derby's awesome," said Becca Harrington, a.k.a. "ArcHer Back," who helped found the team. "It gives me a rush, I'm passionate about it ... it was powerful, people were chanting and banging on the walls, it was amazing."
The score was close towards the end of the bout and fans broke out in cheers as the SIDR won in the final seconds.
