How to Catch a Lightning Bug

Suburban Exterminating experts tell all!

Have you seen Lighting Bugs or Fireflies in your backyard? In my Smithtown backyard, I've spotted a few lightning bugs and I hope that you have, too!

Blinking Bugs

These bugs are actually beetles with 2 pairs of wings.  Fireflies like low-hanging trees and marshy wet areas.

Fireflies use their lights to communicate. If you want to catch one, start your search in a dark corner of your yard or turn your outside lights off.

Once you've caught your firefly, keep it in a cup or jar with plenty of air, some grass and a damp paper towel. These bugs like the moisture!

Let Them Go

If you keep them longer than a day or two, the fireflies may die. Instead, let them go back into your dark backyard so you can catch many more!

"Why are Smithtown teachers continuing to pay for school supplies out of their ownRead More pocket?" Since when? Ever see the big list of supplies kids get in their folders at the end of the year for them to bring in next year? I think you're talking about the wrong school district.
