The Buzz on Stinging Bugs

Bees are helpful insects which pollinate crops and produce honey. However, when you’re stung, it’s hard to see them as “helpful”. In fact, stings hurt!

Bees are helpful insects which pollinate crops and produce honey. However, when you’re stung, it’s hard to see them as “helpful”. In fact, stings hurt!

Preventing Stings

If bees or other stinging pests are constant guests in your backyard barbeque, here are seven ways to help keep bees away from you.

  1. Wear shoes.
  2. Over seed your lawn.
  3. Paint or stain untreated wood.
  4. Keep your garbage cans covered so bees are not attracted to them and you!
  5. Don't swat away the bugs - they'll get angry!
  6. Avoid sweet-scented perfumes.
  7. Make sure your window screens have no holes.

Ouch! Get Rid of that Stinger

A stinger can be removed using a straight edged object. The Federal Food and Drug Administration suggests using a credit card. If you use tweezers, you may squeeze more venom into yourself!  Clean your sting with soap and water to avoid infection. You can avoid swelling by applying ice. Seek medical attention if the area becomes infected. Someone who is infected can develop a fever and the redness/soreness will increase.

To remain safe, contact a professional pest control companies to remove any hives or nests. On Long Island, Suburban Exterminating is happy to help you!

How, in a period of rapidly declining enrollment, can costs be increasing so much from year to year,Read More you ask? The answer is in front of you in black and white. I urge you to READ your district’s budget: we are funding retirements when many of us cannot afford to fund our own during difficult economic times. These wheels were set in motion by contracts negotiated in times of unrealistic growth that may likely not occur again. It is time to open up these plans and relieve this unfair burden from our shoulders. Whatever other measures are pursued in order to control costs, including consolidation within and eventually with other districts, are never going to be enough if you cannot get this problem corrected. Write your congressman, for the love of God. If you need any more incentive to do so, please go to http://rocdocs.democratandchronicle.com/database/teacher-pensions-new-york and look at what Smithtown’s retirees are collecting MONTHLY. It will sicken you.
