Route 454 Construction Progresses; Final Eastbound Work Anticipated This Week

Road work on the eastbound side of Route 454/Veterans Highway is expected to be completed within a week and road work on the westbound side is about 50 percent complete, a state official announced Friday.

The $4.4 million project calls for the construction of a recharge basin, making drainage improvements to eliminate flooding, and improving the quality of storm-water roadway runoff between Lincoln Avenue and Grundy Avenue.

State Assemb. Al Graf, R,C,I-Holbrook, called roadway a vital one for both local and regional commuters.

"Fortunately, with these repairs, we can expect the roadway to be in better shape in the future and better equipped to handle the next potential natural disaster," Graf said. "As we learned during superstorm Sandy, the upkeep of our roadways is vital to help relief arrive where it’s needed most. While the work creates some inconvenience now, I believe this is a positive in the long-term for our community.”

Right now, the project is under way between Coates Avenue and Grundy Avenue on the median and on the south/eastbound shoulder. Graf said drivers should anticipate intermittent lane closures to permit vehicles to enter and exit construction areas.
