Service Clubs Use Summer to Plan

A weekly round-up of service club activity in Smithtown.

This August has brought lovely summer weather (with all this heat, we just might have palm trees growing in Smithtown next year).  Take a break from the heat to hear what the Smithtown service clubs and organizations have been up to this week.

Smithtown Elks:

The Smithtown Elks is a group dedicated to helping the community, specifically the handicapped children and veterans.  They are busy planning their Golf Outing and Italian Dinner Fundraiser Benefit Dinner for Bradley Shutka, which will take place on Monday, Aug. 30. Freemasonry is the oldest and largest fraternity in the world. The group is currently planning their annual Fellowship and Family Breakfast on Saturday, Aug. 14 and their District Theater Event on Sunday, Aug. 15.

The Rotary Club Of Smithtown/The Rotary Club of Smithtown Sunrise:

These groups are part of a volunteer organization of 1.2 million business and professional leaders worldwide seeking to provide humanitarian service and help build good will and peace. Smithtown Sunrise Rotary Club meets every Thursday at 7:45 a.m. at the Smithtown Millennium Diner. The upcoming speaker for Thursday, Aug. 19 is past District Governor Robert Tedesco speaking about vocational service. For information visit www.smithtownsunriserotary.com.

The Smithtown Conservative Party:

This is a group of men and women dedicated to the fundamental principals of conservatism. The next event is their Awards Dinner at The Watermill in November saluting Mr. Edward Walsh, Chairman of the Suffolk County Conservative Party, Mr. Anthony Leteri, Owner of Leteri Waste Management and Supervisor of the Town Of Smithtown.

Smithtown Women's Republican Club:

The objectives of this club are to promote the principles of freedom, equality and justice and membership is open to Smithtown women who are enrolled in the Republican party. Dues are $15 annually. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month and there are no meetings in January, July or August.

The Smithtown Women's Republican Club's next meeting is Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Smithtown Landing Country Club. The guest speaker will be Committee Chairman Bill Ellis, who will familiarize the public with the new voting machines.

Fundraisers:

Cure Cancer with Terri: This organization was created to support Terri Malloy, who is battling cancer.  Terri is a wife and mother of four teenage children. Terri was scheduled to have major surgery in mid-July, but insurance problems have delayed the surgery. Terri's insurance will only pay for a portion of the medical expenses; the remainder must be paid by Terri.  The Cure Cancer with Terri organization will be holding a benefit for Terri on Aug. 21 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Shanahan's in Kings Park. Tickets for adults are $50, children over 10 are $15, children under 10 are free.  The tickets include bottled beer, wine, soda, BBQ & buffet.  There will also be a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and door prizes.
