Soldiers on the Sound Reels in Big Fish and Fun

Fifth annual tourney honors the men and women of the military.

More than 100 men and women from various branches of the military went out on 47 boats for a day of friendly competition and camaraderie for the fifth annual Soldiers on the Sound fishing tournament.

Kings Park resident and Soldiers on the Sound Ltd. President Mark Garry began this event five years ago as a way to give back to those who serve our country.

“The reason that we started Soldiers on the Sound was to thank all of the men and women in the service,” said Garry. “We don’t want people to forget the service and sacrifices they make, the men and women who are married with children who go into harm’s way so we can do what we do here.  It can’t be taken for granted.”

The event began in 2009 with 15 boats and 25 soldiers and has continued to grow each year.

The winning fish weighed in at 6 lbs 12 oz and was caught by MSgt Rich Gerry from the 106th Rescue Wing Air National Guard.  He was assisted by his captain and SBYC member, Steven Sisino, first mate Hunter Garry and fellow guardsman, MSgt John Prendergast.  “My pole just started jumping and I started reeling it in.  Then someone yelled get the net!  That’s when I knew it must be a big one,” said Gerry.
