Afternoon Thunderstorms Cut Power to Hundreds in Smithtown

LIPA's early estimate is restoration between 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Sudden onslaught of afternoon thunderstorms cut off electricity to hundreds of Smithtown area residents.

Long Island Power Authority is reporting 3,012 customers without power in Suffolk County after a string of afternoon thunderstorms, largely along the North Shore, struck on Friday, according to its outage map.

There are 328 households without electricity in Saint James as of 2:20 p.m. with another 129 power outages reported in Smithtown.

Smithtown Patch editor Jennifer Sloat reports the traffic lights are out at Edgewood Road and North Country Road intersection in St. James. 

LIPA's early estimates are indicating the utility company hopes to restore power to to Smithtown by 4 p.m., St. James area by 5:30 p.m.
