Suffolk Lacrosse Playoffs Begin This Week

West Islip is the top seed for boys; Ward Melville is No. 1 girls team.

Lacrosse is a Long Island state of mind, and nothing showcased that more than the state playoffs a year ago. Three Long Island boys squads played in state title games, which ended with Farmingdale hoisting its first Class A plaque.  It could have easily been West Islip instead. In fact, Long Island girls teams have won nine of 10 possible state class titles (A, B, C) since 2009. But the first step is winning Suffolk, which begins with boys and girls lacrosse playoff games this week. The …

Golf Prodigy Jim Liu to Play for Stanford

The young golfer will play for the same school that Tiger Woods once played.

Smithtown teenage golf prodigy Jim Liu has decided to take his post high school golf career to Stanford University. According to a Newsday report [subscription required], Liu is the top golfer in the nation’s Class of 2013, and is second in the Golfweek junior rankings.  Liu is heading to the school, which is the alma mater of another golf great – Tiger Woods. The golfer became the youngest Junior Amateur Champion in the history of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship back in July 2010 when he won the two-round championship in Ada, Michigan – he was just 14 years old. He was later honored Liu with a proclamation in November of the same year for his accomplishments by Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy.

Bigger Paycheck For New School Superintendent

Anthony Annunziato's salary at Smithtown will be more than his salary at Bayport-Blue Point and will also exceed what current superintendent Edward Ehmann makes.

When current Bayport-Blue Point Superintedent Anthony Annunziato takes over for the retiring Smithtown Superintendent Edward Ehmann following this school year he will make more than his predecessor.  According to a Newsday report [subscription required], Annunziato stands to make $259,000 a year, a number that is 6.8 percent more than the $242,550 he makes at Bayport-Blue Point, and roughly $40,000 more than the $219,555 Ehmann takes home. The report also states that Annunziato will pay 20 percent of his health care, where Ehmann does not currently pay into his health care. Regarding the budget: They will threaten us like they always do and say that if the budget isn't passed then the sports will be cancelled, the late buses, the programs, all to scare us thinking that we HAVE to pass this budget otherwise my kid will not be able to do whatever. That is BS. Even on contingent budget nothing changes, they just want to use scare tactics. If we all got together and did…   more ›

Smithtown West Boy's Lacrosse Runs Past Whitman

Wildcats lose at home in boys lacrosse, 17-6.

Smithtown West dominated Whitman in boys lacrosse action Wednesday, 17-6. With exceptional ball sharing and quickness, Smithtown (11-1) was up 6-1 by the end of the first quarter and was well in control by halftime with a 10-2 lead. Bulls coach Bob Moltisanti said the Wildcats have a good coach and a solid program but he has some excellent players capable of putting together some big quarters, which is what happened Wednesday. "When they are on, it's tough to stop," said Moltisanti. Smithtown players Ryan Keenan, James Pannell, Matt Schultz and Alex Dodge contributed with three goals and two assists each. Whitman coach Bob Howell said Smithtown is probably one of the best teams in the country with a lot of talent, but he's proud of his …

West Islip Rallies To Top Smithtown West

Jon Reese gets OT winner after Lions score two late fourth quarter goals.

Down two goals with less than four minutes remaining in regulation it appeared that Smithtown West would get some revenge against West Islip and tighten its grip on the number one ranking in League I. The Lions had other ideas. Three straight goals, two late in the fourth quarter and the game winner by Jon Reese in overtime, gave West Islip an improbable 7-6 win. “I told the team from the get go that this was going to be a street fight for 48 minutes,” said Scott Craig, West Islip’s head coach. “We told them they were going to get knocked down and punched in the face, but that they better get off the deck and keep swinging.” A rematch of the 2011 Class A Championship Game won by West Islip 12-11 in overtime, Thursday’s game at Smithtown …
