Crazy Crepe To Fire Up The Griddles Saturday

New eatery offers more than one way to fill these thin pancakes.

Main Street Smithtown's newest eatery, Crazy Crepe Cafe, will open Saturday, just two months after its former Thai-food tenant shut down.

According to the store manager, Crazy Crepe Cafe will open Saturday, marking the second location for this specialty eatery on Long Island. Its first restaurant operates in Selden.

Like its name suggests, the restaurant sells crepes, thin pancakes most famously associated with French cooking. And Crazy Crepe deals in all kinds, from savory ones like buffalo chicken and turkey club crepes to sweeter crepes meant for dessert. According to the manager, the restaurant also sells wraps, smoothies and Belgian waffles, among other things.

While Smithtown has its share of delis, bakeries, luncheonettes and ice cream/frozen yogurt shops, this will be its first foray into the world of crepes.

"It is different," said Barbara Franco, executive director of the Greater Smithtown Chamber of Commerce. "It's a welcomed change to Main Street, and we hope they get a crowd."

Franco said as of now there are no plans to hold a ceremonial grand opening with the new business.

Crazy Crepe's opening represents a fairly fast turnaround for an empty space on Main Street, where more than a few properties have languished as vacancies.

The 71 East Main Street storefront was most recently Lemon Leaf, a Thai restaurant that was part of a small Long Island chain. That restaurant lasted less than a year in the space, opening in July 2012 and closing this February.

Prior to that, Genghis Kahn Korean BBQ operated for several years there before owner Eric Chang decided to call it quits, blaming the small size of the space and difficulty obtaining permits in the Town of Smithtown.
