Former T. Carlton Hair Designer Opens St. James Salon

A former T. Carlton master hair designer has moved across town to St. James where she's opened her own salon. 

Lauren Moyer recently opened up LM Studio for Hair Color & Design in St. James Galleria, located at 556 North Country Road. Moyer is a former T. Carlton employee of 11 years where she served as an artistic director. 

Moyer said she made a conscious decision to open up her own "artisanal boutique' after the sudden closure of the popular Nesconset hair salon and spa in early August. 

"What I was looking to do is create a higher level of service and use a higher level of products," she said. 

Moyer serves as a regional educator for popular hair salon lines including Tocco Magico, an Italian organic hair color line, and the well-known Ouidad, a specialty hair styling and cutting method for curly hair with its own line of products. 

LM Studio is her first time owning her own two-chair salon, according to Moyer. The small size lends itself to a cozy, intimate atmosphere where a small chalkboard announces the tea of the day. 

Moyer said her aim is to give clients her personal, one-on-one attention. 

"I try to do a great consultation. When I am asking people questions, and they are thorough questions, I am also looking at things like their facial structure, lifestyle and entire look," she said. "I am trying to design a look for somebody, not just a haircut." 

The stylist said she's been fortunately to maintain contact with many of her previous clients from T. Carlton's and has seen many in her new location. 

Moyer said what she believes keeps people coming back is not that she simply offers a haircut, but strongly believes in educating both herself and her clients about their hair. 

"I think a lot of salons are like, 'Here's your haircut, have fun with that.' We definitely spend a lot of time teaching people," Moyer said. "I want them to leave with knowledge and solutions for their hair. 

As part of St. James Galleria, Moyer will have the chance to network and connect with other wellness professionals who will be opening related health and wellness businesses in the upcoming months.
