Years later he returns to the piano, to popular if not critical acclaim.


Shine is a 1996 Australian film based on the life of


pianist David Helfgott, who suffered a


mental breakdown and spent years in institutions.  

Shine won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading


Role (Geoffrey Rush), and was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role


(Armin Mueller-Stahl), Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Original Dramatic


Score, Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.
