100 Things to Do: #60 - Swing Dance at the Brush Barn

Main Street's Brush Barn hosts Swing Dance Long Island on the first Saturday of each month.

Tucked away on East Main Street is the ’s behind the , where once a month you can let loose and enjoy an all-night dancing event with Swing Dance Long Island.

Dances take place on the first Saturday evening of each month from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.. If you don’t know how to swing dance, just show up at 7:30 p.m. for a free group swing dance lesson given by longtime swing dancers John and Shannon. Dance partners or dance shoes are not necessary, but it is recommended that you wear a pair of soft-soled comfortable shoes.

The live music groups rotate for each night, and bring about such great acts as the Long Island Jazz Orchestra (who are playing on September 10) and the Long Island Sound Orchestra. One young and lively group, Lady Luck and the Suicide Kings, play songs ranging from original swing music to the hits of Peggy Lee to even covers of Alanis Morissette and Blondie put to a classy swing style.

Dances here are a mix of east coast swing, west coast swing, savoy lindy hop, balboa, collegiate shag, and some ballroom dancing. Beginners are always welcome, and many of the expert dancers are willing to help newcomers and teach them the moves.

General admission is $15 per person, $13 for students with current photo ID, and $10 for Swing Dance Long Island members.

How, in a period of rapidly declining enrollment, can costs be increasing so much from year to year,Read More you ask? The answer is in front of you in black and white. I urge you to READ your district’s budget: we are funding retirements when many of us cannot afford to fund our own during difficult economic times. These wheels were set in motion by contracts negotiated in times of unrealistic growth that may likely not occur again. It is time to open up these plans and relieve this unfair burden from our shoulders. Whatever other measures are pursued in order to control costs, including consolidation within and eventually with other districts, are never going to be enough if you cannot get this problem corrected. Write your congressman, for the love of God. If you need any more incentive to do so, please go to http://rocdocs.democratandchronicle.com/database/teacher-pensions-new-york and look at what Smithtown’s retirees are collecting MONTHLY. It will sicken you.
