100 Things to Do in Smithtown: #88 - Volunteer at the Sweetbriar Nature Center

People interested in volunteering can work in the formal garden and the butterfly garden at the Sweetbriar Nature Center.

Sweetbriar Nature Center, located on Eckernkamp Drive in Smithtown, is a not-for-profit organization devoted to wildlife rehabilitation and natural science education. The nature center is seeking volunteers interested in lending a hand in their formal gardens, the butterfly garden and more.

The nature preserve is located on 54 acres of garden, woodland, field and wetland habitats neighboring the Nissequogue River and is successful in part due to the hard work and commitment of over 150 volunteers, according to the nature center’s website.

If you enjoy the outdoors, a family atmosphere and have appreciation and respect for Long Island’s unique wildlife and ecosystems, you could join Sweetbriar’s team of volunteers.

Volunteer opportunities include gardeners, who assist with planting, pruning, watering and weeding, and vivarium assistants, who help with all aspects of the operation and maintenance of Long Island’s first living seasonal Butterfly and Moth Vivarium, displaying over 20 species of native North American butterflies and moths along with plants and flowers, according to the center’s website.

They offer flexible scheduling for each volunteer. Contact the center to schedule an interview or fill out a volunteer questionnaire.
