David Lewis, Smithtown's Greatest Person of 2012

The votes are in and you chose this local firefighter, business owner and philanthropist.

We asked in December for Smithtown Patch readers to vote on who was the greatest person in Smithtown for 2012. Voting has been closed and you chose Dave Lewis as the winner.

Lewis brought in 38 percent of your votes, edging out local author Jeb Ladouceur who had 26 percent of your votes.

Lewis, among many other things, is a firefighter with the Smithtown Fire Department, an officer with the New York Police Department, Owner of Five Star Pools of Suffolk, and the Co-Director of Camp Adventure for the American Cancer Society.

"I've known Dave for a long time and he's a tremendous asset to the Smithtown Fire Department and the residents of Smithtown," said Smithtown Fire Department Chief John Hansen.

Your comments on the original voting story applauded Lewis' efforts just as much as the chiefs.

"He took me one Halloween to an event the camp was hosting for the kids. I was just so blown away by what a good hearted person he is," wrote Smithtown Patch reader Anthony R. "He turned 40 a year or 2 ago and he made his birthday party into something that once again was to help kids with cancer. He literally sold 'tickets' to his party and all the money went to children with cancer. That was Dave's gift. Your gift to him was buying a 'ticket' to his party to help sick kids ... He is such an unbelievable person. I can only aspire to be half the kind of guy he is. I feel lucky to know him personally."

There is no one more deserving of this honor. Obviously many folks agreed. Dave Lewis is an example for all of us to follow. Our family is honored to know Dave and his family. We are truly blessed to call Dave a friend. There aren't too many people like this around anymore. One voter called him, "Our Hometown Hero." It's the truth. It really is. Congratulations, Dave!!

I don't know Dave, but the numbers don't lie. He's five times as popular as the entire Smithtown Fire Department! That certainly says something! Jeb Ladouceur

I don't know Dave, but he has the right name, and he's dedicated his life to serving his country and that's awesome!

WOW!! What a prestigious honor. I am truly blown away by this. I was proud to even be nominated for this award. Thank you Kelli Cirino, Anthony Rampias and family for nominating me and for all the kind words. You guys are AWESOME. I am blessed to have won, however everyone who was nominated for this award should be proud as well because it is ALL of our positive impact that makes Smithtown a great place to live. Hopefully the youth of our community will see how we help each other in our own ways, and will in return be inspired to live their lives helping others as well. I will continue to live my life being a positive role model to anyone who's path I may cross. Thank you to all who voted for me. In August of this year, I plan to go to Belfast,Ireland to compete in the 2013 World Police and Fire Games. I will be striving to bring back two gold medals for USA, but more specifically for the NYPD and Smithtown Fire Dept. The events I will be competing in are "The World's Toughest Cop Alive" and "The World's Ultimate Firefighter".

Dave, CONGRATS and well deserved! For those who don't know, I first worked side by side with Dave on the streets of NYC in the NYPD during the late 90's and later on when I was promoted, I had the privilege to have Dave work with me again. As a cop and as a supervisor, I will say that Dave's work ethic and professionalism are unmatched. I have always admired his lifelong dedication to helping others in need. As such, this award comes as no surprise to me - another great job by Dave Lewis!

Dave is one of the finest young men I have ever known, and I've known him since he was twelve, and in the twenty-one years since, he continually amazes me more and more each and every year I have been graced to know him. OUTSTANDING ! !

Congratulations David Lewis. While I do not know the other person who may well be deserving, I have had the pleasure of knowing David when he trained at Smithtown Karate for a short time many years ago, Even then he demonstrated a quality not often seen in people. His kindhearted, caring nature always shone through and he was always willing to help others. Reading about him in the Smithtown News has always made me proud to say I know him. Smithtown is blessed to have someone of his character in our area. This is a well deserved honor.
