Edgewood Avenue Gridlock Getting Worse?

Main Street changes push traffic to this neighborhood route.

While the adjustment period over has at this point passed, the effect is clear: Traffic moves slower on this troubled roadway.

But the changes from locals that more traffic has been diverted to Edgewood Avenue, a neighborhood road that stretches from St. James to Route 25 in Smithtown just beyond the railway overpass, essentially bypassing Main Street entirely. It's also a shortcut for getting to Kings Park, since Edgewood intersects with Landing Avenue.

Comments emailed to Patch editors or posted on the site have targeted the new gridlock on this neighborhood road, and Patch has seen first-hand how cars back up in rush hour, especially at the intersection of 25A in St. James and in Smithtown where Nissequogue River Road and Landing Road meet Edgewood.

Is this something you've noticed? Are you guilty of clogging Edgewood to avoid the Main Street traffic. Let us know.

And if you live on Edgewood and would like to speak about traffic there, email henry@patch.com.

If they could synchronize the lights better, it would improve things tremendously - it works pretty well to keep traffic moving in NYC up / down town. The lights on Main Street continue to assist the "bottlenecks".

Something my mom mentioned tonight while we were all talking about this traffic... They should have eliminated the parking on main street and people would just have to park across the street in the parking lot.

This is something very similar to what I had suggested awhile back. We need more public parking in both Smithtown and St. James. Tell your mom that sometimes the most simple of ideas are often the most overlooked solutions. Mom knows best!

Why not cross at the cross walk when the light is red....only morons step out between cars ......

The traffic on Edgewood got worse after the Y closed because of the opening of Nessaquake middle school.. and it is only going to get worse since they have started new residential construction on Edgewood. More houses people! They only time you can freely move on Edgewood is before 8am or after 7pm. All times in between, good luck folks!- A St. James resident.
