Library Circulation Up This Summer

Suffolk County Cooperative Library System reports increases across the county.

The summer months filled with reading lists, reading contest participation and vacationers indulging in fantasy, fiction, or non-fiction novels have brought increased circulation among public libraries in Suffolk County this summer.

"Our overall circulation is up almost ten percent over this time last year, even with our Commack Branch closed since February," said Sue McManus, assistant director at the Smithtown Special Library District. "There have been over a half a million checkouts and renewals January to July."

According to the Suffolk Cooperative Learning System, there was an 18 percent increase in circulation from January 2010 to July 2010. This statistic includes checkouts and renewals.  A total of 8,403,462 renewals and checkouts were made since January across Suffolk County and the Smithtown Library is included in the statistics.

"We are confident that our circulation will jump even more once our expansion and renovation project is complete and our users come in to see their new and improved library buildings," McManus said. " I am thankful when taxpayers utilize their own library resources."
