Smithtown residents are sharply divided over a proposal to build a senior housing complex on Route 25A.

More than 50 residents and business owners clashed Tuesday night over St. Johnland Development Group's proposal to build Whisper Landing, a 110-unit assisted living facility, on the corner of River Heights Road and Route 25A in Smithtown.

As Edgar "Javier" Viera flips pancakes and lovingly prepares stuffed French toast for hungry Smithtown diners, his cool confidence comes from years of experience. 

Viera, the chef and co-owner of the new Javier's Cafe on Main Street, has spent the last 16 years working as a cook at Maureen & Daughters' Kitchen in nearby Smithtown. Now, he's opened his own family-style restaurant. 

Hero Nurse Saves Stricken Smithtown Teacher
Thanks to a few quick acting fourth graders and a school nurse and an art teacher, Steve Jackowski is alive today.

The fourth grade teacher at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School had a near death experience on May 10 when he collapsed on the playground while out for recess with his class. The children, however, knew what to do.

The blighted former Nassau Suffolk Lumber Yard will overshadow Smithtown’s West Main Street a little longer as developers of a mixed-used retail and apartment complex have been sent back to the drawing board.

Smithtown Planning Department blasted North Fork Management & Maintenance’s proposed plans for Downtown on Main, a project aimed at constructing two buildings that mix retail store, office space and 56 apartments on the site of the former Nassau Suffolk Lumber Yard.

Sex Offender Ousted from School Zone After Community Outcry
Cops have relocated a Level 3 sex offender on parole after he was found to have moved within feet of Smithtown East High School, prompting outraged community members to raise alarms.

According to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services website, Jae Claassen, 23, was living at 151 Northern Blvd. in St. James, which according to MapQuest records is within .21 miles of Smithtown East High School. Claassen was convicted in Sept. of 2008 of a Level 3 crime.
