Zumba Class at East Raises Money for the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation

Approximately 100 Zumba enthusiasts danced at Wednesday's event, put together by student Despina Bubaris.

Nearly 100 people of all ages attended the Zumba-Thon Wednesday night held at Smithtown High School East. From 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., people were encouraged to "dance your way to a fitter you with exciting and unique Latin moves and rhythms."  Tickets for the event were $6 for pre-sale and $8 at the door and all money raised was donated to the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation.

The coordinator of the Zumba-Thon, Smithtown East junior Despina Bubaris, said she wanted to create an event that will "inspire healthy decisions."  With November being National Diabetes Month, it proved to be an ideal time to spread awareness, raise money and improve our health.

The instructors for the evening were "Sandra & Friends" of Kings Park Dance Center.  They lead the dancing crowd in an enjoyable yet demanding dance that functions as an exercise routine as well.  The Kings Park Dance Center, located at 85 Main Street, has "Zumba Fitness" seven days a week.

Bubaris devised a plan entitled "The Healthy Choice Initiative," which is a step-by-step guide to improve ones health.  The categories are "Awareness Education," "In School Action Plan," and "Fundraising." According to Bubaris, "this program will educate and bring awareness of this national epidemic into our schools.  At the same time, we will raise funds to help local diabetics off-set the cost of the necessary supplies needed to treat their condition."
