Pool Store Closes, Another Opens in Same Location

The former home to Best Pool Service will be filled by a tenant with similar products and services.

When Best Pool Service moved north on Lake Avenue in St. James it , but signs placed in its windows indicate it will soon be filled – by another pool store.

Signs in the windows that read "Empty Store Coming Soon" as late as the end of last week have been replaced by ones that read "Coming Soon Discount Pool Supply."

No information on Discount's opening date is available.

Best moved to 543 Lake Avenue, across the street from St. James Elementary. While the move began late last year the store has yet to open its doors in its new spot.

Owner James Best said in an interview with Smithtown Patch in November of last year that and business was continuing to increase.

“I do think it’s going to be good for us, we outgrew this place three years ago,” Best said. “I think moving will take us to the next level, this way we’ll have a better view for the customer to look at because we’re kind of cramped here.”

Excellent, another store front filled and as always, competition is good for the consumer. I hope there's enough business for the both of them.

I have recently wondered how, in an area where pools are only open 4 months out of the year, there is enough business for so many pool stores around. Even without competition, to me it seems like a very specialized area with little profit to be made, except for rare and large purchases. But I clearly must be missing something because I know of at least 5 stores in the Smithtown/Hauppauge area.

James has a lot to offer that goes way beyond pools and pool maintenance. He also does masonry and also offers snow removal as well as other areas of expertise. Yes, Johnathan, I thought the same thing since more people are changing with the financial slope but since I had seen 2 pool stores close I think they both have a fighting chance. I do think the pool company that is filling the empty store at 448 was one that has been in town before and never really left. Best of Luck to both, its good to not have another empty shell around!
