Dozens of customers flocked to a popular Smithtown salon on Friday morning to find their appointments canceled and seek returns on unused gift cards.

T. Carlton's Spalon put up a handwritten note reading, "Sorry, we  are closed. We are going out of business," on its doors on Friday.

Antoinette Cellucci, a hair stylist who works at T. Carlton's, confirmed the hair salon and day spa is closing, but would not go into any further details.  She said many of the staff members will be moving their business to nearby Cactus Salons.

Many frustrated customers were gathering in the salon's parking lot, looking for returns on unused gift cards.  One woman said she had a $300 balance on a gift card and she was unsure if it would be honored.

Alan Heyman, a Nesconset resident, said he picked up a phone call from his wife's hair stylist at Carlton's on Thursday evening reporting the salon would be closed by Saturday. The phone call caught him off guard.

"They’ve been a staple in the community for a long time, they are always appearing to be busy and seem to have a good business model there," Heyman said.

He had recently purchased a $100 gift certificate for his wife, Kim.

"I knew my wife had a $100 gift card still, so I told her 'You need to get over there and figure out what’s going on," Heyman said.

She visited the spalon on Thursday night, but was without much success.

Heyman said as the gift card was recently purchased using an American Express credit card, he placed a phone call to the company to dispute the charges. He believes he might be one of the lucky ones.

I have worked for Tcarltons for 12years....it is like no other and will never be duplicated....yes it is a tragedy that personal issues took down an empire of talented and awesome people that were family to me....but it's time to move on...yes I can go on about the Payless weeks ...but I'll focus on the 12 years that were awesome...I had met clients that are truly great people that I loved and hopefully will see again....and the people you meet are what makes this business awesome...I love what I do...i am sorry to everyone that has lost in this matter..a salon that kept employees for umpteen years isn't exactly a bad thing...it meant that things were great at one time...there are no winners here...shame on you if your trying to cash in on someones misfortune...it comes back at you...be careful...I think people lose sight of the good ....however i am starting a new chapter in a new location....Privato is located in stonybrook...6316759090...I am pleased to say that I am so lucky to be working with old fiends in a personal setting...I hope to see everyone again...I wish all my co workers peace and luck...life is good!xxoo

I enjoyed reading all the comments. T-Carlton's was the "It" place to go. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford to go there...Extremely OVER-PRICED and over-hyped.

Just want to remind you that the Mindful Turtle is a yoga studio where I'll be seeing clients for massage. If u have gift certificates you will only pay $30 for a massage until the balance is used up. If you have a $100 gift card you can get up to 3 massages. I think it's only fair to help those people who lost money. Please call 516-458-7617 to make a appointment.

Well at least it gives all these other spas and salons a chance to promote themselves under the guise of helping others out. I do not see one post on here offering sympathy for the failed business owners. Maybe we should take up a collection for them.
crookhaven August 05, 2013 at 02:58 PM
collection for the thieves?? haha...........hey, suziQ- now we can afford to go there and drink in the parking lot!!!!haha

Concerned Customer August 11, 2013 at 08:41 PM
Hi all. I was a loyal customer of T. Carlton for 10+ years. Over that time I spent thousands of dollars on services and I did so gladly. I loved the staff and I loved the way they treated me. I was saddened to hear of the closing, I was worried about the staff but I was angered for all the clients that lost money. I then received a copy of a letter sent from Cactus Salon and was HORRIFIED. Tom is at Cactus taking clients again and it's as if nothing happened. Sorry - closed my salon, screwed over a lot of people but hey - come see me at Cactus and get a discount on product... WHAT????? Am I nuts here??? This is so not OK. Tom is at Cactus Salon in St. James at 631-862-8622.

It does not surprise me to read Tom is at another salon trying to get his and other stylists clients back. As in my previous post, I know he is underhanded and a thief! He worked for me in the 80's. don't support him or follow him as he will give you the shaft again! Most of all don't feel bad for him. Like I said "what goes around comes around'. He got what he deserved!
Amy Elisabeth August 12, 2013 at 07:10 PM
Got a call from a previous client who was part of the monthly massage program. He claimed that T. Carlton debited money from his bank account three days AFTER they closed their doors! So not only did they stiff their employees they are still stealing money from their customers. I am outraged by their behavior and I really don't care at this point who knows it.
Susan Trainor August 28, 2013 at 09:32 PM
