Steak/Sushi Restaurant Rises at Former Boulder Creek Site

Insignia Prime Steak and Sushi is scheduled to open on Route 347 at the end of 2011.

Months of construction at the former site of Boulder Creek Restaurant on Nesconset Highway and Mount Pleasant Road has drawn local residents' interest and speculation on what's coming next. The answer: steak and sushi.

Work is underway on Insignia Prime Steak and Sushi, an upscale steakhouse whose owners believe they can find success where Boulder Creek failed.

"They are two extremely different steakhouse styles," said Ronald Johnston, general manager of Insignia. "This is pretty much like nothing Long Island has ever seen."

Boulder Creek, a Western-inspired, mountain lodge-themed chain restaurant did "extremely well" at the Route 347 location after it first opened for business in 1999, Johnston said. Over time, the Smithtown restaurant "just didn't pan out" according to Arthur Viana, one of Insignia's owners, who did not elaborate.

The chain closed the Smithtown location about four years ago, as well as many of its other locations in the region. Boulder Creek still has four restaurants on Long Island in Bay Shore, Franklin Square, Hicksville and Riverhead.

Boulder Creek's owners, restauranteurs Anthony Scotto and Mario Sbarro, ended their business partnership after it closed, and the building on Route 347 sat vacant until June 2011, when construction began on the new restaurant. Scotto remains an owner with three new partners, including Viana.

Viana said Insignia will be a high-end eatery and bar with an elaborate menu and wine selection featuring more than 500 labels. It will serve dinner seven days a week and offer catering, he said. One of its features will be a large bar designed to seat at least 35 people, separated from the dining area.

The building occupies the same footprint as the former Boulder Creek, but has been modified extensively. Insignia will have a lounge area and a garden area with outdoor seating, Johnston said, with a sushi bar in the main dining room. A complete valet parking service will be offered, he added.

Belvedere Construction of East Setauket is handling the construction and renovations of Insigna, which are on schedule to be finished in the beginning of November.

The restaurant’s opening is not set, but is expected to be in late November or early December, according to Viana.

on occasion , like a birthday or such eaten at a high end restaurant.. I have only eaten at Paces may be 4 times in 31 yrs .... YES , I am a 10!! Aren't you ?? You should consider yourself a 10... You are entilted to spend you money any way you see fit..If that is what you want then well , enjoy . May be treat a family who cannot afford to go there , You know, the ones who eat in Friendly's ? Or use the discount coupons so they can go out once in awhile . That is the point I am saying , most cannot never afford to eat in places like that.,,, I donate my time to help these families ,, There are so many needy , .. So while you are spoling yourself , think of them ...

Toast to the needy people in the area...
Candyee November 12, 2011 at 05:31 PM
Thank you , Cindy . There are so that need help , food, clothes , many of our Vets who have no jobs , no place to live , need a helping hand and food, and we "badly need an '"over the top" restaurant? That is what got me upset .I donate time and cook food ( I have won awards for my cooking ) can afford to eat there, but I won't. I believe in Karma, everyone will get there just reward .
Carolyn November 13, 2011 at 08:46 PM
I do help in many ways but I'm not going to donate an expense dinner to them. I still feel Insignia is a great place Smithtown will have to enjoy. If you wanted a food pantry or soup kitchen Smithtown isnt the place for it. As for Cindy, karma will absolutely come to those who wish harm on others so thank you Camille for reminding us of that. Insignia is going to be a great place and i'm sure will create alot of memories shared there. I'm also sure they will give away a ton of gift cards to schools or organizations raffling or fund raising. Other restaurants always have and Friendlys wasnt one of them.
Candyee November 13, 2011 at 09:39 PM
I would hope they would help out people in need. Any left over bakery, food , etc should be donated to the needy. There are many restaurants that throw out , awful .I don t know what Friendly's does, I hope they reconsider. You are right, Smithtown is not the place for a soup kitchen , but the churches in area have pantries , hard to keep them stocked these days . I really don t eat in Friendlys ,but I know of families that do there, lucky they can do that occasional .. My kids well grown ,,, have grandkids , Don t have to do that anymore .

I'm curious to see how well it does. I will check it out but there are so many place to go--it'll have to be really good for me to drive 12 miles!! I tend to stay local--lots of good restaurants on the south shore to frequent.

You are aware that Blackstones in Huntington , is also a Scotto restaurant .There are many good places to go ..You are right .
Smithtown Rez November 14, 2011 at 06:16 PM
Wow...so an entreprenuer takes over an abandoned commercial location to make a go of it and will let capitalism decide if he is successful, but this thread devolves into negative commentary about it not being for families of lesser means, or they better donate to local food pantries, etc. Did I miss the part where this place bulldozed a shelter for needy families and/or stole food off of a child's plate? Let's wish for a successful business that will add to the tax base. This helps all of Smithtown. If you want to help in the local community volunteer your time and means. I do. And I also go to Friendly's AND higher end restaurants. sheesh...

.. Mr Scotto was part owner of Boulder Creek ,The property has been up for sale since he and Mr Sbarro parted ways. I am assuming he could not sell it for the price he was asking . Decieded Smithtown needs an "upscale " restaurant .He has been paying taxes on the property.. Whatever. BTW , I DO volunteer for less fortunate here in area. You would be amazed how many there are in oiur 'upscale" neighborhood. I hope you do same .It may be your neighbors who are to proud to come foward. Smithtown having a shelter? Never would happen . Enjoy the new place !

@ Smithtown Rez. There are many issues we do agree on . I have been reading your letters on different topics for awhile.

New steakhouse feeds cancer research by Michael H. Samuels Published: November 16, 2011 Tags: Anthony Scotto, Cancer research, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Insignia Steakhouse, Long Island To celebrate the grand opening of a Smithtown steakhouse, its owner is donating half of first week sales to cancer research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Anthony Scotto, the proprietor of several Long Island restaurants including Blackstone in Melville and Rare650 in Syosset, will open his newest restaurant called Insignia Prime Steak & Sushi at 610 Nesconset Highway at the end of the month. “We want to give back to the Long Island community that honors us with their patronage,” Scotto said in a statement. “I can think of no better way than to support Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s innovative research program which is committed to improving the diagnosis and treatment of all major forms of cancer.”
We Heart Long Island December 02, 2011 at 12:49 PM
Uh... HELLOooooo.... this is NOT a socialist country... no one has to "share" their wealth. Nor feel guilty for working hard to earn their salary and be able to enjoy a good dinner at a high end restaurant - that they have earned,,,This is America. I feel bad that you seem so bitter, Camille.
Jim R. December 05, 2011 at 01:38 AM
You're missing the point "We Heart...". Their are plenty of people and families on LI that just want to go out and have a good meal w/out paying exorbitant prices. I do fairly well, but most of these "high end" places serve garbage. They just jack up the prices to keep out the goombah trash that lives here.
Candyee December 05, 2011 at 03:11 PM
We Heart. I am NOT bitter at all .If helping out unfortunate people that are down on there luck is bad , then I am guilty . You are right,no one has to share there wealth, but it is rewarding to help out those who have lost jobs, homes, etc.Very rewarding to help out others . I have a wonderful life .I chose to help whom I can . A $100 plus meal for 2 people is excessive. That $100 can feed a family for a week or so.You sound greedy , we heart, and I feel bad for you, We heart Long Island .The seven deadly sins is alive and well , I see. As you savor your meal , think about others here on LI that were in the same postion as you are at one time. It may be you someday . Namaste .
Candyee December 05, 2011 at 03:13 PM
Grammar typo ..The seven deadly ARE alive and well. Excuse my error.
