Mail Carriers, Flanagan Help Stamp Out Hunger

Local postal carriers will be collecting more than just letters from mailboxes on Saturday.

Residents can participate in the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger food drive by leaving non-perishable goods in their mailbox to provide food to the needy.

This effort, which is now in its 20th year, is aimed at helping the local families who rely on this assistance throughout the summer and is part the largest one-day food collection in the nation.

According to the NALC, those wishing to participate should donate
non-perishable items such as canned meat and fish, canned soup, juice,
pasta, vegetables, cereal and rice.  The NALC asks residents to avoid
donating any items that have expired or those in glass containers.

Additionally, state Sen. John Flanagan will be collecting donations at his office in
Smithtown until Friday. Anyone wishing to donate to the food drive can visit his office at 260 Middle Country Road in Smithtown during normal business hours.
