Quails Trim Tick Population at Caleb Smith

One Smithtown resident has partnered with local schools to raise quails, which feed on a rising tick population.

Have you pulled more ticks than normal off yourself this year while taking a walk through ? Worry not - or, at least, worry less. Quails are coming to the rescue, according to a Newsday article.

The article states that Smithtown resident Eric Powers has partnered with local schools to raise quails in the classroom, nearly 200 of which were recently released to help cut down the tick population. His program partners with state and county parks, the article states.

"It connects kids to nature," one teacher told Newsday. "We live in a world of technology, and this makes them care."

As a 40 year resident of Smithtown, I'd like to know who in the State or County allowed deer to be transplanted into Caleb Smith? Never a deer in that park for 40 years and know I've seen three. Research that!

Just as Fred and Barney use their feet to power their cars, deer use their feet to walk. I suppose we can have armed guards to keep the deer from walking into the park.

You are absolutely right pj. Its comparing apples to oranges. Assisted living is for the elderlyRead More that cant take care of themselves. What noise is created. They are indoors and at the age where driving may not be an option. And the facility faces Route 25A. A main corridor that has been used as a main road for over 50 years. A road that has gas stations, bars, hospitals, nursing homes, retail stores and high schools presently on it. Why not an assisted living.

Exactly. Don't see a problem having it. Many of them don't even go outdoors.

We have an assisted living center right next to our neighborhood. For the most part it is quiet,Read More there is not a lot more traffic, it even looks nice. I will take it over another strip mall, supermarket, bar any day . Like the previous poster wrote, it serves our community.
