The Do's and Don'ts of Car Buying

Purchasing a vehicle is a major financial decision that makes many people uneasy! To boost your confidence, here is a list of tips to follow when buying a new or used car.

Do, Focus on the price of the car rather than the monthly payments. Keep in mind, taking out a longer loan for a more expensive car gives you a lower monthly payment, but you will be stuck paying it for much longer!

Do, Get pre-approved for a loan before you go to the dealership.  Dealers can make more money off of interest, which may not give them the motivation to get you the best loan.  Get approved through your credit union so you know exactly what you can afford and get a better APR.

Don’t get caught up in advertised deals. Many times the models listed with the best price will be out of stock by the time you get there. Do your research and decide what car is best for you and how much it should cost. The more you research, the better equipped you are!

Don’t feel pressured! Remember that buying a car is a major purchase so take your time. Research exactly what you want and don’t get caught up purchasing add-ons that aren’t necessary for you!
