BLOG: We Need a Grocery Store on Main Street

Town Planners and Realtors please consider bringing a small grocery store to the empty storefront property just west of Chase Bank!

Would it be possible to bring a small grocery store preferably a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods, or even a local IGA to the King Kullen site on Main Street, most recently Mandees and Tru Value Hardware?

Back in the day we had Blue Jays, Bohack and A&P on Main Street.  Later on we had Grand Union and Waldbaums.  This to me is a problem as we sorely lack a decent grocery store on Main Street.  Could the powers that be look into bringing this to pass?

"Wild by Nature" would be great!!!! Love that place!!!!

Sadly, the small site would most likely not be profitable for any major chain to make a go of it. The profit margin for supermarkets is so small that it is nearly impossible to make enough money to pay rent, insurance, salaries, etc and also combat inventory shrinkage.... Although a small grocery would be a great addition to town.....

I think if they put a Trader Joes' there it would have amazing business. Anyone who has been to one knows how busy they are and the dedicated clientele they have. This one would be directly in between the one out in Lake Grove and the one in Commack. Bring on a Trader Joe's and leave out the crap

It would be a good idea if it were feasible. A grocery store is what is called an "anchor store." The use of an anchor store in a neighborhood is that it brings people to the particular shopping center, and the stores nearby gain from the foot traffic of those coming by to get their groceries. My only fear is that when Waldbaums was there, it was not doing well - and obviously eventually closed. Where on Main Street do you expect to put it? As it currently stands, I drive through main street to go food shopping at Stop & Shop. Would be better if I was stopping AT main street to shop. A smaller store seems like a good idea, though you would have to deal with higher prices of a mom & pop type shop. Trader Joes I think would be the best, simply because they are typically smaller but also have the essentials.

Trader Joe's does not sell organic food.In an area , such as Smithtown, an organic food store would do well. Just my opinion ..

I agree. A Trader Joe's would be perfect!!

LA fitness only took 75 percent of the old Waldbaums. There's still room in that shopping center for a small store such as Key Food or Foodtown. However... I still miss Waldbaums. Great store and still is

SMITHTOWN'S COMMERCIAL TAXES, ALONG WITH L.I.P.A., & NAT GRID EXPENSES. ARE DRIVING BUSINESSES OUT OF BUSINESS....NOT TO MENTION MANY OTHER RED TAPE NIGHTMARES....IT'S JUST NOT WORTH IT

I still think a Trader Joes would kick butt and be very sucessful in that location. Would thrive in a town like ours! Also it would revitalize that western end of main street that is starting to look seedy.

Stop and Shop or Trader Joe's would be great. It would be so convenient to have a place to pick up essentials on your way home from the train station.

Stop and Shop is about a mile west ,never busy,.. Smithtown is a good place for an organic food store, which Trader Joe's is not. I lean more towards Wild by Nature. But Woody is correct with his post .

You are absolutely right pj. Its comparing apples to oranges. Assisted living is for the elderlyRead More that cant take care of themselves. What noise is created. They are indoors and at the age where driving may not be an option. And the facility faces Route 25A. A main corridor that has been used as a main road for over 50 years. A road that has gas stations, bars, hospitals, nursing homes, retail stores and high schools presently on it. Why not an assisted living.

Exactly. Don't see a problem having it. Many of them don't even go outdoors.

We have an assisted living center right next to our neighborhood. For the most part it is quiet,Read More there is not a lot more traffic, it even looks nice. I will take it over another strip mall, supermarket, bar any day . Like the previous poster wrote, it serves our community.
