How Are You Preparing Your Kids for Back to School?

School resumes Sept. 4.

The summer is winding down, temperatures are dropping, and the racks in department stores, pharmacies and supermarkets are filling up with back-to-school related items.

Breaking the cycle of waking up late and heading over to the beach isn't easy, but with school a couple weeks away some parents find it necessary to start the back-to-school process now. Some parents do it by waking their kids up early like they were already in school, others do lots of shopping for supplies to remind their kids that school is coming soon, and there are numerous other ways to prep for school and avoid the initial summer-is-over shock.

How are you preparing your kids to go back to school? Let us know in the comments.

Reminder: School starts for the Smithtown Central School District on Sept. 4.

The one thing we were not prepared for in back to school was the ungodly time the High School west bus comes to pick up my daughter. originally the bus assignment was for her stop to be picked up at 6:39, however they have since officially changed the time to 6:20. At this time in the morning to a ninth grader every minute counts! I called transportation to find out why they made the pick up earlier and was told because the high school has told transportation that they want the busses at the school before 7:00 . our particular bus is scheduled to get there between 6:45 and 6:50! this gives the students 35 minutes before class to just hang out in the hallways, probably not a good idea! Im told that due to the economy transportation was asked to fill busses to capacity to limit the number of busses used. This increased the bus routes and the busses needed more time to get the large middle school routes and to school on time. I think it is unfair that the school did not consider the students in this decision, it is soley based on saving a few bucks. 35 free minutes to hang out in the hallways at school before it starts, and before most teachers are there does not sound like a safe enviroment to me. What can be done?
