The county health department on Monday afternoon issued advisories for 60 county beaches, warning locals that runoff from the morning's heavy rains could cause bacteria levels to spike at local bathing spots.
The Suffolk County Department of Health Services is warning against swimming in many beaches along the Long Island Sound and the Great South Bay as a result.
Local beaches include Callahans Beach, , Nissequogue Point Beach, and Schubert Beach in the Town of Smithtown, which are all susceptible to heavy runoff following big storms like Monday's soaker.
The department said advisories would be lifted in 24 hours as long as bacteria readings don't exceed state standards.
