Body in Short Beach Fatal Car Fire Identified

Police say the body in the car was of a 45-year-old Middle Island woman.

Police have identified the body found dead in Tuesday's fatal car fire at Short Beach in Nissequogue. 

According to police, the victim is Lauren Fontana, 45, of Middle Island. A police investigation into the death is ongoing. 

The Nissequogue Fire Department responded to a 911 call at 11:54 a.m. on Tuesday that a car was on fire in the parking lot at the beach. When firefighters extinguished the fire, a body was found in the car.

that the body found in the car fire was so extensively damaged that even the gender of the victim could not be determined and police would need to use dental records and the license plate on the car to identify the body.
