Should This House Be Torn Down?

Town says "bamboo" house on Edgewood Avenue is unsafe, unsanitary.

The decaying and bamboo-shielded house at 436 Edgewood Avenue could be demolished by the town if owners don't turn up to offer a plan for rehabbing the community eyesore.

According to the Times of Smithtown, the town will hold a meeting on May 23 to discuss the demolition option after attempts to reach the owner, listed as the Church of Gospel Ministry, have come up empty.

While the house is not officially on the town's list of blighted properties that the town has target for remediation, officials have said the Edgewood Avenue "bamboo" house is structurally unsafe and is plagued with mold and rot, according to the Times of Smithtown.

The last time the town dealt with 436 Edgewood was in 2010, when they approved the installation of fencing around the property to section off the "unsafe" structure, according to a May 2010 town agenda.According to real estate listing site Redfin.com, the lot size at 436 Edgewood is more than 35,000 square feet and has a taxable value of $11,365.
