Smithtown Supervisor Patrick Vecchio will run for re-election as the Republican candidate for town supervisor seat this November.

Vecchio, R-Fort Salonga, won the Republican nomination to run for Smithtown Town Supervisor over Councilman Robert Creighton by 3,245 votes to 2,566 votes, according to Suffolk County Board of Elections as of 10:27 p.m. Tuesday night. All 92 voting districts are reporting their results.

Vecchio took the GOP line on November's ballot by a definitive margin of 679 votes, or 55.82 percent of primary voters. By comparison, he only won the GOP's official endorsement by 74 votes in May.

"I’m disappointed, I think we ran a very good and honest race. But the people have spoken," Creighton said on Tuesday night.

Vecchio could not be immediately reached for comment on the primary results.

Creighton will still get his name on November's ballot for supervisor. He has won the Conservative party's primary with 314 votes despite Vecchio's efforts to launch a write-in campaign (145 votes) and challenger Linda Donnelly, who received 55 votes.

"I believe I probably will," Creighton said about running on the Conservative line in November, opposite Vecchio. "I will take a couple of days before I make that firm."

Smithtown would benefit greatly from someone like Steve Snair. He's not part of the system, only a man with a fresh approach willing to tackle from angles that are different than from Vecchio and Creighton.

At least if Vecchio wins my property taxes wont skyrocket. The school district on the other hand......

Unless a local politician can figure out a way to overcome the national economy and simultaneously bring shoppers back to Main Street, nothing that any of these guys might do will eliminate empty storefronts. However, Creighton--in his zeal to attempt to do something to correct the empty storefront 'problem'-- will instead destroy our beautiful residential neighborhoods by allowing illegal land uses to continue, expand, and flourish. (Like Malloy and Wehrheim already sounding off positively about Toby Carslon's new 'plan' to perform work that was banned in Smithtown a decade ago.) And I'm still waiting for just one Creighton supporter to explain why Creighton didn't put any of his good ideas into effect as he watched the Town 'crumble' over the last 4 + years when he had a voting majority with Malloy and Wehrheim. Instead, all I hear are attacks on Vecchio, or attacks on Vecchio's supporters. People like Veronica Grayson, who offensively suggests because her guy lost that Vecchio supporters are either brainwashed or afraid--- frankly, the only thing that I was afraid of was your guy winning.
P. J. Miller September 11, 2013 at 07:43 PM
I'm with you SICK and Tired. You are 100% right. Richie your days are over. Now that Pat won!! Get over it.
Veronica Grayson September 11, 2013 at 08:37 PM
It was a primary Pat did not win.. he has got to go

Vecchio is on his way out. Schaeffer is bringing in the big guns. Instead of facing reality and stepping down with dignity Vechhio's egomania will once again cost the Republicans. Creighton and Vecchio will split the Republican vote again and Snair will come out on top. Why didnt anything get done the past 4 years with Creighton Wehrheim and Malloy on Town Board????? Answer= Vecchio and DeRubeis and their ridiculous games. Vecchio should have stepped down. 36 years is too long to do anything- especially when for the last 10 or so you've been trading water!

Another reason Mr Altshculer was such a big supporter of Creighton. Newsday article 9/11/13 Re: Bishop Ethics Committee Review (At issue is a complaint filed in August 2012 by Smithtown Councilman Robert Creighton, who backed Bishop's Republican challenger Randy Altschuler last year. Creighton charged that Bishop sought a quid pro quo for helping a constituent, in a violation of the law and ethics rules.) http://www.newsday.com/long-island/suffolk/rep-tim-bishop-subject-of-house-ethics-committee-review-1.6055799

Ok Richie Marcus--so what idea that Creighton had was blocked by the 'games' played by Vecchio and DeRubeis? I'd really love to hear how a voting minority without veto power blocked anything, but go ahead--

I think the argument about the Town of Smithtown deteriorating is moot. All the "prospering towns" are on waterfront property (Northport, Huntington,Sayville,Stony Brook Port Jeff etc, etc). Smithtown has more in common as a "tourist" destination with Brentwood. The town fathers (Smiths) took all the good waterfront property for themselves to live on and enjoy and gave the rest of us the "Bull". When you go out for diner, where would you rather go, Brentwood/Smithtown or Port Jeff?
P. J. Miller September 12, 2013 at 11:30 AM
Creighton is out - he will have a hard time getting supports to fund his campaign. Malloy is also out. Used his office and his position to help ONE employee out. Yes it was for sick days. BUT...the employee is out of time and in the eyes of the law if you are out of time either you come back to work or you are fired. Now - there have been plenty of people that have been in the same position and have lost their jobs because they were unable to come back to work due to their illness. This time Malloy called in a favor and this one employee is now marked. I guess it is 'who you know' to get anywhere. But it is wrong and unethical. Malloy should have known better.

is vecchio's kid still crapping on the water supply?
crookhaven September 12, 2013 at 12:07 PM

cry about it p.j
Richie Marcus September 12, 2013 at 04:37 PM
Wow PJ you are such a whiner. Much like your leader sounds like you have a bit of a personal vendetta here. Hey did you see your buddy Kern got arrested for his weed farm? He too is a loyal Vecchio supporter! Vecchio's favored boys can't always use the boss to get them out of things!
P. J. Miller September 12, 2013 at 07:51 PM
Heard Kern knows you well.
Sick and tired September 12, 2013 at 08:13 PM
Who are you kidding Richie Marcus? You've already admitted you have personal animus towards Vecchio. Stop projecting.
Richie Marcus September 12, 2013 at 11:02 PM
I do .I do not like him and PJ obviously doesn't like someone else. PJ, know your ties to Kern.Who are you trying to kid?
P. J. Miller September 14, 2013 at 12:45 PM
Notice that all the Creighton signs are down! And the Vecchio signs are still up!
knee jerk September 14, 2013 at 12:58 PM
He (Vecchio) does have an election coming up, so maybe his campaign wanted to get a jump on it. It's kind of like my neighbor who never takes his Christmas lights down. He's either very well prepared or totally disorganized.
stownson September 15, 2013 at 08:43 AM
Reality check - Creighton lost and him and his cronies are running on the Conservative line. Besides Creighton's kool-aid drinkers, many republicans will vote with the party. Why? Because they are republicans and believe in Vecchio due to his actions, not an empty Obama style campaign that Creighton ran. Give it up Creighton.
P. J. Miller September 15, 2013 at 08:48 AM
Absolutely correct Stowson! Also Creighton ran a very negative and accusatory campaign - like a child. We need an ADULT not a person pointing fingers. He never once mentioned what he did only what he wants to do. If he has so many plans, he had 4 years. The people know that Vecchio is for us, 36 years in office speaks for itself. Give it up Creighton, hang up your sign and go back into retirement. Not many people trust him............do you have to guess why? He ruined it for himself. No second chances.
P. J. Miller November 02, 2013 at 10:56 AM
Because that is what Creighton does...just talks. If he is voted in on Tuesday the whole town will suffer in more ways that you want to know. Just vote for Pat Vecchio and lets move on.
P. J. Miller November 02, 2013 at 12:12 PM
FINALLY someone other than me sees it the way SMITGHTOWNPROTECTOR#42 does. Yes Mr Creighton is USING town workers, on our dime, and our equipment to work on his campaign during the work week. He even promised them promotions if he is elected! Is this the person you want running our town....corrupt? Doesn't tell us the whole story. We are in for a major problem if his guy gets elected. Save us the misery...........RE ELECT VECCHIO...
knee jerk November 02, 2013 at 08:36 PM
@P.J. Miller: Maybe you should back Creighton. If he can get away with using town workers and equipment on our dime to help his campaign during the work week, I'm almost certain he could stop your neighbor from burning his debris and smoking you out almost daily.
P. J. Miller November 02, 2013 at 10:11 PM
Don't think he can knee jerk. I will never back Creighton. He is not a good choice for our town.
crookhaven November 03, 2013 at 05:39 PM
vecchio is 82. there are reasons for term limits. vote for the filthy democrats!!!!
crookhaven November 03, 2013 at 05:39 PM
craig cain for dog catcher!!!!
P. J. Miller November 03, 2013 at 06:52 PM
Age has nothing to do with his excellent record for our town. His experience speaks for itself. If everyone felt like that -we would all be out of a job.
Smithtownprotector#42 November 04, 2013 at 05:41 PM
To Mr. Creighton & his supporters I would like to ask you another question since you have yet to answer the last question. When you made the proposal to have Smithtown be the main junk yard site for LI cars destroyed in the Sandy Hurricane, what were your considerations and if you are elected Supervisor do you see Smithtown as having an important role in being a general junk yard depository for all of Long Island?
P. J. Miller November 04, 2013 at 06:05 PM
CREIGHTON WILL BRING SMITHTOWN DOWN! He promised the town workers promotions and they believe him and they are going to vote for him. Fools. They will get nothing. Pat Vecchio is our best choice this election. Go with what you know. He has always had our best interest and money his priority.
