Are Smithtown Schools Safe?

Thursday's shooting threat only the lastest news of violence in the schools.

While major New York media outlets have descended on Smithtown High School West following Thursday's , the situation is only the latest story of violence in the district.

Less than two months ago, West student Gabrielle Petagna brought the issue of school violence to the community when she , an altercation that left her with a concussion, dizziness, headaches, fatigue, difficulties with concentration and nightmares of the ambush, she told the board.

After Thursday's threat that there would be a shooting at the school the next day, students who showed up for school on Friday morning had their bags and lockers searched and noticed a heavy security presence.
