Committee Ratifies Report Recommending School Closing

The Citizens Advisory Committee report that recommends the shuttering Nesconset Elementary will be presented to the Board of Education Thursday with a public hearing set for Feb. 15.

The Citizens Advisory Committee will present its final report to the  board of education Thursday – the culmination 19 meetings that yielded a report that could seal the fate of Nesconset Elementary.

Director of Curriculum Jennifer Bradshaw said it is too early to tell how the board will react to the committee’s findings or what their thoughts are concerning the committee recommendations.

 to recommend closing Nesconset Elementary to the board, with 17 votes for the closing of Nesconset Elementary and four votes for the closing of Mills Pond Elementary.

Voting members of the committee voted unanimously to ratify the report Jan. 26, which will be delivered for the Board of Education to review prior to the committee’s presentation Thursday. All members of the committee agreed by showing of hands that no parts of the report misrepresented the work they put in.

The committee will present the report to the Board of Education and to the public on Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. and a public hearing on the report and possible school closing will be held on Feb. 15 at 7 p.m., both in the Joseph Barton Building on New York Avenue.
