Smithtown East celebrated its ninety-eighth commencement Thursday evening.

Clear blue skies were a fitting background against the red and white gowns worn by the graduating class at Smithtown East's ninety-eighth commencement ceremony on Thursday evening.

East principal Ed Thompson welcomed students, faculty and family and offered a moment of silence for Liam Armstrong, who was tragically killed earlier this year, which was then followed by a presentation of Liam's diploma to his siblings; Connor, Ian and Bridget.

"All doors are wide open for you," Thompson told the class. "Remember, the best way to predict your future is to design it yourself."

Honor Speaker Bailey Werner told her fellow graduating class of more than 360 students she wasn't sure what she was going to speak about, but she said one particular phrase stood out to her- YOLO- you only live once.

"Take advantage of every opportunity you are given and always work hard," she said. "Life is too valuable to spend time doing something you don't love."

Class President Victoria Timmel expressed what many in the audience were likely thinking. "Don't blink, it all goes by too fast."
