Merit Scholarship Students Receive Awards from Administration

Seven semifinalists and 10 commended students of the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program take home awards from Tuesday's Board of Education meeting.

School administration presented awards to the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists from East and West Tuesday night, as well as the program's commended students.

Awards were given to East's semifinalists Aniksha Balamurugan, Justine Talbot and Haleigh Williams; semifinalists that received awards from West include Michael Catalano, Allie Cohen and Emily Roach. West's Alexander Barnes, who is one of the seven semifinalists, was not in attendance.

Commended students were those that placed in the top five percent of the students that took the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The 10 commended students from East and West are Kelsey Amarosa, Angela Chiraz, Luke Johnson, Sean Moran, Casey Morrone, Neema Patel, Robert Pinter, Emily Shea, Bianca Silva and Kelly Weller.

Roughly 1.5 million students were screened for the program by taking the test nationwide.
