Smithtown Local Tapped as Three Village Assistant Superintendent

The Three Village Board of Education on Tuesday voted unanimously to appoint Kevin Scanlon, a 12-year Smithtown resident, as the new assistant superintendent for educational services, the position that Cheryl Pedisich will vacate as she steps into on July 1.

Scanlon is in his seventh year as the high school principal in the Roslyn School District, a position he accepted following the 2005 financial scandal that rocked Roslyn, a school system serving approximately 3,336 students.

"We’re very confident in the great things he’s going to be able to bring to the district," school board president John Diviney said immediately following Scanlon's appointment.

Scanlon, 42, is a former faculty member within Three Village. He taught social studies at Ward Melville High School for five years, then served as chairman of humanities at Gelinas Junior High for two – a position he began around the time of 9/11. He left Three Village to become the district supervisor in the Oyster Bay School District, and eventually turned down an offer to become an assistant superintendent in Oyster Bay to take his current position in Roslyn.

He earned his undergraduate degree in Middle Eastern history from Iona College, along with a Master's degree in criminal justice from Iona as well. He earned his school administrator's certificate and school district administrator's certificate from Stony Brook University.

"The first goal is to try to get to know what's going on in the district," said Scanlon, who also served eight years in the U.S. Naval Reserve. "Hit the ground running, so to speak. Come up with a game plan once we see what's going on in the district."
