Smithtown Students Rate School Lunch Satisfaction

Smithtown students give hot food in the cafeteria an overall two star rating, but give the sandwich bar a five star rating.

This year students noticed that Smithtown is making efforts to bring better foods to the high school. The Commons now has a vending machine with fruit inside and some vending machines even have the calorie count next to the bag of chips/pretzels, so you know before you buy. Students now have no access to soda or sugar-filled beverages in the vending machines any more since the machines don't carry soda, only healthy fruit drinks, Snapple and water.

According to an informal survey I created and distributed to 150 students chosen at random, not one student disliked the "make your own sandwich bar" in the Commons. You have a choice of a wrap or a hero (12 inches long), one type of Boars Head meat cheese, and any sort of topping with dressing you would like, all for a total of 3.50. Nearly all students gave this a five star rating. The students love to have options, and to make their own choices, because usually they are the ones paying for it.

Most students disliked the hot lunches. In some instances the meat inside the chicken has been purple and black and the hamburgers have white chunks in them. One student complained that there was hair in his food and they did not give him a refund. About half of the surveys stated that the pizza is very unappetizing, that the cheese has a rubbery texture and literally stretches and bounces back in place when tried to be pulled off.

Almost all surveys completed contained requests from many students for real pizza from a local pizzeria to be sold or made on premises. School clubs sell the pizza for two dollars a slice and it gets purchased within a blink of an eye.

On the brighter side, the tacos are a big hit, I am not sure why, but almost everyone buys them. But regardless of the high taco sales, 53 surveys stated they wanted better meat.

Many students said they would pay more money for better looking and more appetizing school lunches. The main reason why clubs aren't allowed to have pizza sales during lunch periods is because it will take away the cafeterias profits. This is logical, since so much of the food is unappealing kids are going to buy the better type, which is why they should just change it to the pizzeria's pizza.

The school store is where most students go to purchase snacks throughout the day. They sell taquitos and used to sell Otis Spunkmyer cookies. They would smell up the hallway with the fresh scent of cookie dough. It would make everyone want to buy a bag, until the school store was not allowed to sell them anymore and I am aware of the reason.

Overall the students are content with the lunch served at . Maybe not so much the hot lunch, but they're happy with the vending machines, school store and the sandwiches.
