Smithtown Teen Loses Battle Against Cancer

A Smithtown West graduate has died after a two-year battle against against cancer. 

Sean Cook, Class of 2013, died Friday morning due to stage 4 Germ cell cancer, according to Smithtown West High School staff. The school district was informed early Friday morning by a close friend of the Cook family. 

Cook was a Smithtown youth bowler and a firefighter with Smithtown Fire Department. 

DOT Drops Plans to Widen Main Street, Re-evaluates Route 111 Intersection

New York State's Department of Transportation is looking at Smithtown's Route 25 in a different light after last year's public outcry. 

Eileen Peters, spokeswoman for the DOT, said state officials notified the Town of Smithtown they would be withdrawing their previous plans to widen Route 25 - know as Smithtown Main Street and Middle Country Road - between the Route 111 and Route 347 intersection.

West Nile-Infested Mosquito Found in Nesconset

Three mosquito samples taken from Nesconset have has tested positive for West Nile, according to Suffolk County health officials.

These are 3 of 17 samples across the county testing positive. The samples were taken between August 13 and August 16.
