JWG's Necessity June 4 & 5, 2012

Wherein JWG extols the writings of George Washington.

This morning, on Facebook, I looked at pictures that two of our new Friends posted of their new wedding rings. These two women were among the many couples that got married at the same ceremony with René and me. I feel among the best wedding gifts was getting to know more Friends. Friends who shared a wedding. That day, our wedding day, all of us were in a stupor. We never thought we would live to see such a day. In the past, I always scoffed at group weddings. I now, with experience, realize the joy.

A year ago, we did not know if our State’s Senate would vote to legalize our marriage. It was, for me, a very worrisome period. I wrote a letter to my Governor and Senators. I sent some of those Senators some of my poems concerning my thoughts on this subject — marriage equality. I sent them a quote by George Washington. My neighbors and Friends called our Senator’s office in support of our predicament. In the end, our Senator did not vote to support us — constituents who had not the power nor money to assure his reelection, I am sure. In fact, I never even read where my Senator bothered to get to know, and talk to, some same-sex couples. To be fair, René and I didn’t go to him, either. Frankly, politicians who speak as if they represent us All, but, by their very votes prove otherwise, are not in my favor. I fear that my blood pressure would rise too, too much. I fear I would be talking to a false-smiling brick wall. The rhetoric in the letter from his office in response to my letter was proof enough of this point. Ego prevailed. However, a couple of Senators had a sense of Human Truth to break from the Republican mindset. They had a conscience to realize that, as President Washington said, “All Citizens who show responsibility have a Right to be treated as Equals under our Constitution”.

Equality is still to be attained by many of us who were neglected by that group of men we refer to as “The Founding Fathers”. This Country has evolved. We must All change.

My fascination of, and adoration for, the writings of George Washington amuses my many Friends. How often I hear, “Here he goes again!” when I begin to mention our First President’s name.

President Washington knew his history. He knew history so well that he could foretell our Country’s future history. His warnings of the party system, and his encouragement of inclusiveness, in most part, have been ignored to the detriment of today’s Society.

This morning, I once again leafed through my volume of Washington’s writings. I was going to include more quotes that were written, and spoken, by this sage who held the admiration of his peers. His boots have never been filled.

What has intrigued me is what he, Washington, wrote about an Individual’s rights when living among many who may not believe they agree with that Individual’s lifestyle and beliefs. Washington reiterated many times that if an Individual does no harm, than, no harm must be done to take away any Freedoms from that Individual.

And that, for now, is all I will say on George Washington.
